In 2019 San Candido celebrated the 1250th anniversary of its foundation. It was founded in 769 by the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III who gave the Abbot Atto of Scharnitz a piece of land between today’s Monguelfo in the west and Abfaltersbach in today’s East Tyrol as a gift with the condition to found a Benedictine monastery for converting the Slavs. This resulted in today’s San Candido, the oldest community in South Tyrol.
